Day Twenty-two: Moving towards a better boring.

I'm quite encouraged by the fact that, by sticking to the limited 30 items I chose for this challenge, even my get-out-the-door-and-go outfits aren't the abject failures they used to be. While this ensemble is a bit boring for the blog it looks and feels like me and was perfectly serviceable for a couple of hours of volunteer work and running some errands. It certainly could have been improved by some exciting accessories but on the day in question I was completely out of time.

My tights are fishnet. I was hoping they added at least a small dash of sass to the outfit. Otherwise it's incredibly basic but it's so basically me that I have (almost) no complaints at all. An A-line skirt and a somewhat curvy knit top is an easy, practical, and pleasing combination for me. This particular skirt is quickly becoming the most worn item in my wardrobe. I also included a black A-line in my 30-for-30 choices but the much heavier, almost felt-like, fabric of the black skirt makes it less comfortable to wear than this one and somewhat bulky, especially at the waist. (Bulk at the waist has to be something no one wants!)

I like:

  • Seeing an improvement even in the outfits that I don't have time to tinker with.
  • Feeling like myself in my clothes.
  • The neckline of this shirt- it's perfect for showcasing a necklace.
  • The perfect skirt. I could probably wear this everyday and not mind much.

I'd change:

  • Accessories- some color or sparkle are called for here. I've been singing the praises of the outfit but it is a bit dull. It's a nice blank canvas.

The verdict:

  • Even though it's not exciting I'm giving this one an 8/10 rating. I was pleased to find that I could just throw something on and go and not end up hating it and cursing my disorganization all day.
  • It wouldn't hurt to have a couple of combinations like this one that I can grab in a pinch because, although I'm trying to be more organized, I know I will always have those 'Jeesze, where did the time go?' mornings.

  1. Your little blings and the extra long sleeves keep this from being boring. I like this without colour - it brings lots of focus to your face. Maybe a bright red lipstick if you want more colour...?

    1. I have such a troubled relationship with lipstick. I admire it on others so much but anything stronger than tinted lipbalm is really hard for me to wear. My top lip just literally disappears when I smile and a bright lipstick ends up looking like a red pencil thin mustache. I've tried penciling a more generous bow to the top lip but that requires so much up keep throughout the day and the potential for clown effects is so high.

  2. I agree with Melanie! I also think the muted palette looks sophisticated and intentional. Still, I am a sucker for bright red lips. :)

    1. I am really thinking I might have to give the lipstick thing a try again. I haven't worn actual lipstick since the early 90's. But I'm trying to re-address all of those things that I've decided somewhere along the line for whatever reason that I NEVER do. Lipstick might have to be next on the list. I should at least try it again- I do so love the look on others.

  3. Black and grey are considered classic neutrals. Most Italian and English women wear a lot of this combination. I know cause when I visited England I looked so out of place in my bright colors. So boring your not European and Classic you are.
You have lovely skin and hair and I think this outfit show cases how wearing a neutral for some really works.

    1. Aww shucks, you know the way straight to my heart! You had me at European. I am really enjoying the black and grey core wardrobe- so much so that I think I might keep it for longer than 30 days. Maybe until the end of the season when I need to pull out my warm weather clothes? I have not felt limited by this palette at all. I read somewhere that a truly functional wardrobe should be a combination of 2 neutrals plus one 'color' which for me would be grey, black and blue. Once I get all 30 outfits posted I'm thinking I might try sticking to these basics while adding in 2 pieces a week in those three colors until April when I can start over with 30 core spring/summer pieces and build up again from there.

    2. As a European I can vouch for the truth of the Europeaness-claim. :)
